That is actually a black fungus that invades pores in sapwood in trees down there. It's very solid, but yes similar to spalting.

If you go to my website and look at Joe Allens' Guitar, you will see the bottom half of this board, which is the back of that guitar. Same stuff, but with a coating of epoxy and finish. Nice huh?
